More heat resistant than similar ecosystems, the Red Sea corals represent a unique ecosystem, and they may hold the key to understanding how to tackle coral bleaching elsewhere. Rising ocean temperatures have severely impacted species and ecosystems, causing coral bleaching, the loss of breeding grounds for fish and mammals, increased extreme weather events, and threatened food security. The ocean and marine ecosystems are fundamental in the stabilization of the world’s complex climate system. One of the longest continuous living reefs in the world, the Gulf of Aqaba could potentially be one of the planet’s largest marine refuges from climate change.
